Our 24/7 emergency hotline, First Assistance, is staffed by a team of expert medical and logistics professionals; their number one priority is to get you home safe and sound.
They will liaise with your on-the-ground medical team - good if you're not great with the local language - and if you have to be evacuated to another country or hospital, they'll help determine the best location for treatment. If you're in a small village and need emergency assistance, they may organise transport to a major hospital with a higher standard of care.
However, if you’re advised that you need medical transfer or evacuation to New Zealand, you or a member of your travelling party must contact First Assistance as soon as possible and obtain their prior approval to any expenses. If you do not contact First Assistance or follow their guidance, expenses that could have been avoided or minimised may not be paid.
We also give you the option to choose your own medical adviser or First Assistance can appoint an approved medical adviser to see you (unless you’re treated under a reciprocal health care agreement).
