An excess (also known as a deductible) is the amount you are required to pay before your travel insurance policy will cover your claim. This helps keeps premiums down by preventing trivial claims for things like a $20 pair of sunglasses.
E.g. if you have an excess of $200 and your brand new $2000 laptop is stolen, you will have to pay $200, while your travel insurance policy will pay up to $1800.
At TINZ, we have a non-removable excess of $200, but you can choose to double it to $400 to lower the cost of your policy. For Already Overseas policies, the standard excess is $250, and can be doubled to $500 to lower the cost of your policy.
We only charge an excess per event, not per claim, so if you go to the hospital after being injured, and then go back for additional follow up visits for the same injury, we will only charge you the excess once, as it's for the same event.
We do not charge an excess on a number of benefits, including delayed luggage, resumption of journey, alternative transport expenses, accidental death, permanent disability and loss of income.
To see a full list of benefits where excess applies, please refer to our excess page, or see the Table of Benefits in our Policy Wording.
